Fast Food Vegetarian

Although I would never recommend fast food ever, sometimes you are just in a pinch, and need something fast.  So I’ve been trying to find out which fast food restaurants have something decent for vegetarians. Something I have usually gone for is a slice of thin crust pizza.  And even better if I can find a pizza place with whole wheat pizza, which I’m seeing more often now.  I”ll get a slice with some veggies on top as well, and then I don’t feel so bad.  Getting some tomato is good, and the whole wheat crust will have some fiber in it.
If I don’t go for pizza I’ll usually go to subway, and get a veggie sandwich on whole grain bread.  I have really been enjoying this sandwich.  I just go the  whole grain bread, and stuff it with as many veggies as I can, spinach (not so much lettuce), onion, cucumber, peppers, tomatoes, some oil and oregano.  The veggie delight sandwich has about 50-70 less calories then the rest of the meat options, and is much lower in sodium.  A 6in sub clocks in at 230 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, and 420mg of sodium, with 5 grams of fibers and 8 or protein.

Subs & Salads

I’ve also had the quiznos veggie sub, which I thought was pretty good, they toast the whole sandwich it includes most of the subway ingredients with the addition of eggplant. It has about the same nutritional value, with a few more calories and about 200mg more of sodium.
One of my favorite places to go is Salad Works, and get a nice big salad with a whole grain roll and green tea. You just have to be careful with their salad dressing.  Stay away from the creamy dressing which tend to be loaded in fat and calories.  Always a good idea to get the dressing on the side as well, so you don’t load up on it.
Two places I love to go for lunch quick is Whole Foods and Wegmans.  Both have a great salad bars with great vegetarian pasta & rice dishes as well.  I’ll load up a leafy greens as much vegetables as possible with olive oil and pepper for dressing, some fruit, and a side of pasta maybe.

Burgers

I’ve had the Burger King veggie burger, which I thought tasted more like plastic then anything else.  So I really don’t recommend it.  We’d all be better off not hanging inthe BK lounge. McDonald’s doesn’t seem to even be trying, so I would avoid them as well.  I ran across this one site starting a petition for McDonald’s to create vegetarian burgers.  Wendy’s at least has a decent salad selection, but no veggie burgers. You can also get a good baked potato.

Taco Bell I hear has some decent vegetarian options.  Like the bean burrito, and bean tostada. The soft burrito tortillas are not vegan, they contain non-fat dry milk. The hard corn tortillas however are vegan, as are the re-fried beans.

KFC has recently made a step in the right direction and has added a vegetarian chicken burger to their menu. It consists of a soy chicken patty, lettuce, and mayonnaise. I have not tried this yet.

So far for my experience:
Subway: A
Quizos: B+
Burger King: C-
McDonalds: D

Here is a great resource as well for vegetarian options as most restaurants. Plus always check out Happy Cow.

Please share your favorite vegetarian options for eating out quick in the comments!
